Board & Batten Half Bath
Hi Guys Welcome back.
I wanted to share one of the first home projects we did in our home! Our actual first project was our family room that flows into this first floor half bath. The room was dark and dingy and had tons of natural light and ugly carpeting. We ripped out the carpet, took down all the dirty blinds and gave the room a fresh coat of paint. Before getting started on the bathroom makeover, we realized we had a massive termite issue after removing the existing vanity from the pervious owners. The wall extremely weak and needed to be cut out and given brand new insulation and dry wall.
My vision for this bathroom was to do a mix of modern and traditional trim work and went to home depot to select the perfect trim pieces to make board and batten. I used 2 inch poplar for the board and batten and the top trim piece was 2 inch trim molding. Because this bathroom was home depot orange… i had to completely primer the entire bathroom multiple times to paint in contrasting whites. I taped my half way point and started to paint the ceiling first with two coats then the top with two coats as well. One coat below the tape.
Another issue we ran into was the spacing where the vanity is intended is not a standard size and we were trying to save money and purchased a standard size vanity to cut fit into the space perfectly. My dad being a carpenter perviously was the master mind behind cutting the quartz counter and jigsawing the base and legs to get it snug into the out cove.
Once the vanity installation miracles were made. I purchased a case of 20 poplar pieces at 40 inch high and cut each piece to my desired height. First things first is dividing up the space you have and counting how many pieces of poplar you would like on each wall. This will be different for everyone due to the fact everyone has a different size room. Once we figured that out, it was time to get started. We painted the base molding perviously when doing the family room so we just needed to use brad nails to secure the base, trim and poplar boards to the wall. After all is set in place and leveled out, I then again used my primer on all the trim pieces- let it dry and started to paint my second coat on the bottom half. I wound up painting three coats on the bottom half. After all the paint and board and batten is done, it was time to install the counter, sink, faucet and toilet. Which sat in my garage for the entirety of this project. The faucet I went with Verdanza by Glacier bay in Antique Brass. Its important to note that I did not match any of the brass accessories in this one space. it is very hard to do so, the handles and towel bar are in champagne bronze.
Rule of thumb is just like shoes and a belt, if they are further away from each other no one is going to tell. Mixing metals is also something I love to do. Especially with brass and matte black. I accented the mirror and picture frames in black to bring some contrast to the bathroom and I absolutely love the outcome. I hope you do as well.
